Chicago jeweler Christy Lucius had always tried to look at the world differently; to see and experience it as an artist. Inspiration can come from anywhere, so it is no surprise that for Christy, it comes simply from the things she loves. She is inspired by fashion, culture, travel, books, mythology, and constellations of the night sky, to name a few. Living in Chicago is also incredibly inspiring for her, with its breathtaking architecture and great community of local artists. She is always looking for something new to strike her, to influence her next piece.
Christy's passion began at an early age, where she would peruse the local bead shops in search of tiny treasures. She spent her childhood beading, painting, and learning about the arts. It was this passion that led her to study at a strong liberal arts college. She earned her degree in Metalsmithing at Ohio Wesleyan University, and also gained first hand experience by studying under artists in New York City.
With that knowledge and a great deal of perseverance, her jewelry line LUCIUS was born. "I wanted to create something that was unique, yet easy to wear," says Christy. "So often, many creative and unique pieces are impractical or uncomfortable. Yet with so much of the same old jewelry out there, it is easy to see why people are looking for something different. LUCIUS manages to be comfortable, but still stand out."
The organic, sculptural quality of her jewelry has to do with the fact that each piece is first handmade by the artist herself. Multiples are cast from the original design, and each piece is hand polished. "It is very important to me that the piece retains that handmade quality.
